Just a few weeks after the launch of SW105GT Taniwha, Southern Wind is proud to announce that the construction of their first yacht with hybrid propulsion has begun.The fourth unit of the successful SW96 project, was conceived for a young, hands-on owner, a passionate sailor on his third sailing yacht. He approached SWS looking for a high-performance and efficient cruising yacht to sail around the world with a short-handed crew and eventually participate in some of the most reputable superyacht regattas.



After initially considering a custom construction, the Client opted for a Southern Wind “Smart Custom” yacht to reap the benefits of the yard and design team’s experience and reliability. He encouraged the shipyard to develop a version of a SW96 optimised to meet his request for a sexy, comfortable, reliable and above all sustainable yacht.

SW96#4 Nyumba is therefore the first HYBRID yacht in the Southern Wind fleet. Her Hybrid propulsion system is designed in collaboration with BAE SYSTEMS, a multinational company that constructs technology-led defence and aerospace systems and advanced hybrid propulsion systems. Their patented “Hybrid Gen” Electric Propulsion system has been engineered for this yacht to be compliant with the most stringent environmental rules (IMO Tier III).



With hull lines penned by Farr Yacht Design, this high-performance superyacht will have a full carbon hull and prepreg side and foredeck. Lifting keel, twin rudder configuration, carbon rigging and an upgraded hydraulic winches package are only some of the ingredients emphasizing the sporty soul of Nyumba. A tender garage for a 4,5m tender and a customised extra large swimming platform make for better comfort and enjoyment at sea.



SW96#04 has the sleek and elegant lines of the GT deck configuration, specially designed to meet the client’s requests. Massimo Gino of Nauta Design, responsible for the yacht’s exterior and interior design, explains: “The SW 96#04 deck design is the evolution of the successful GT deck concept, already applied on the newly launched SW105 GT “TANIWHA” with several details that have been designed specifically to meet the Owner’s requests. Clear, uncluttered deck equipment positioning allows for easy circulation on board and the mainsail track and steering positions are completely new. The GT styling makes everything look breath-taking in its simplicity and lightness“.

NYUMBA, the Swahili word for “home,” reflects the fact that the owners want the yacht to be their second home. Comfortable and cozy, SW96#04 interiors feature Southern Wind’s owner cabin forward layout with two comfortable guest cabins amidships and crew quarters and galley aft. Her main saloon is a light, bright open space that will be customised to meet the needs posed by Clients’ live-aboard use of the yacht. The volumes of a fourth cabin are devoted to a comfortable TV area with an extra lounging sofa.

SW96#4 Nyumba is currently under construction at the shipyard in Cape Town with hull sides and bottom outer skin lamination completed. Delivery of Southern Wind Shipyard’s first hybrid yacht is scheduled for Summer 2022.

The project’s lightship displacement of 58,500kg grants excellent light wind speed with a manageable rig size. The hull has full waterlines and straight end diagonals, a wide, low transom and full forward sections. The deck hardware is optimized for both shorthand performance cruising and offshore racing. The Southern Wind 96 benefits from cutting-edge design and superb styling, which makes her a formidable opponent in any regatta. The SW96 SORCERESS, was custom-made for an owner who wanted a larger performance yacht to use in both transoceanic races and blue water cruises.

Southern Wind 96 composite yachts feature award-winning interiors, as in the case of SW96#02 SEATIUS. This yacht’s interior was designed by Nauta in collaboration with interior designer Jeroen Machielsen from Studio Hermanides and won the Best Interior Design Sailing Yachts award at the prestigious 2019 Boat International Design and Innovation Awards. SW96#03 Ammonite he has been conceived for a second time Southern Wind owner willing to alternate bluewater comfortable navigation with more performance-oriented experiences.

“SW96’s interior layout features a large saloon above the engine room which is accessible through a full height control room. The owner’s cabin forward and four en suite guest cabins amidships offer privacy for all on board. Crew quarters include two crew cabins, two heads and a spacious galley that opens onto the crew mess.”
