8 best yachts of 2022
« : 31.01.2022, 23:42:06 »

The year has not yet begun, and the list of the best yachts has already been announced. Sail Magazine has published its list of nominees in various categories for the title of "Best Yacht 2022". Among the categories there are catamarans over 50 feet, cruisers and even a dayseller!

Kinetic 54

Best catamaran 50 feet or more
Recently, several different manufacturers have been trying to break into the high-end cruising catamaran market. Kinetic, an American company based in South Africa, is one of them. She made a splash last year with her impressive all-carbon Kinetic 54.

Kinetic 54 this is a slightly smaller version of the first version of Kinetic. The first version was 64 feet long and saw the light of day two years ago. The 54 has all the characteristics that buyers are looking for in this niche:
  • modern design focused on high driving performance,
  • not too wide floats,
  • high deck,
  • durable and lightweight construction,
  • easy to use cockpit and elegant, beautifully finished rooms.
What sets the boat apart is the level of sophistication and thoughtfulness with which Kinetic approaches the package. The boat boasts a state of the art 24V DC electrical system.

The state-of-the-art C-Zone software is used for power monitoring. Thanks to this, this system automatically balances any high loads. It can automatically start the DC generator as needed.

Large-capacity fuel and water tanks in two hulls are interconnected by overflow pumps to transfer weight from side to side. There are other interesting details too! For example, a barrel for live bait. It can be installed in the back of one case. Ideal for those who like to fish while crossing.

Elan GT6

Best Monohull Cruiser 40-50ft

Founded in 1949 as a manufacturer of ski equipment, the Slovenian company Elan has also become a well-known boat builder over the past two decades. Elan GT6 is the second model in the line of Elan cruise boats. In press releases Elan GT6 was called the first boat in history to be "engineered by Porsche".

The build quality, as you would expect from Elan, is well above average. The body is laid in a complex 3D system, covered with vinylester resin. Internal structural details such as the bulkheads and the heavy keel grate are fully glazed.

The ballast is lead, not iron, as on most European boats. The quality of the finish is also excellent. The deck layout combines ease of sailing and cruising comfort.

There are large fixed tables in the cockpit and a barbecue and fridge are available as an option. The cockpit itself is quite spacious.

This boat also sails very well. Elan GT6 fast and responsive enough to keep racing enthusiasts interested. At the same time, it is not so nimble that beginners are afraid of it.

Balance 482

Best catamaran boat 40-50 feet long

Model Balance 482 has a couple of narrow cases. It is possible to install either a high-performance fixed keel or a double centerboard (the latter option is much more popular). The stems and transoms of the hulls are bevelled to minimize weight at the ends.

The mainsail, for example, has a trapezoidal shape (square top), the staysail in this model is self-overlapping. All this facilitates the management of the catamaran, but, despite this, does not make the management simple.

How Balance 482 behaves on the go? One of the last tests carried out involved a crew of 12 people. Among them were not only experienced sailors, but also beginners. There was enough space for everyone - in the cabins, and on the cockpit, and on the deck.

At a speed of 10 knots, no special efforts were required from the crew. The boat itself seemed to hover above the water, allowing people to relax and enjoy the views. In total, according to the test crew, the catamaran Balance 482 proved to be a real cruiser. Excellent driving performance is ideally combined with comfort.

Grand Soleil 44

The yacht with the best sailing performance

Both below deck and on board Grand Soleil 44 showcases the same elegance and build quality sailors have come to expect from one of Europe's finest shipyards. However, going out to Grand Soleil 44 in 12-knot winds, it's impossible not to notice how fast this magnificent boat sails, and how well balanced and easy it is to steer.

In strong winds, the yacht will give a wonderful feeling of control in the full sense of the word. Grand Soleil 44 this is the kind of yacht you would love to compete on the race track.

From a practical point of view, Grand Soleil is available in two different trim levels with many additional options. For example, owners can choose from two rig options: a standard one with an aluminum mast, or a larger carbon “racing” version for those looking for more speed.

As they say at the shipyard: "The soul of the new Grand Soleil 44 is the soul of a cruiser who knows how to be competitive in the IRC and ORC regattas. Grand Soleil 44 this is a boat that is easy to use for both cruising and racing.”

Fair enough. But even on a cruise, this boat boasts excellent sailing performance, so it is she who becomes the winner in the "driving performance" category.

Dufour 61

Best Monohull 50' and above

Recently, serial yacht manufacturers have been increasingly offering very large sailboats. They are designed for owners with a higher income than the typical yachtsman.

New Dufour 61, the largest proposed by Dufour since the merger with Fountaine pajot. However, he distinguished himself Dufour 61 not only in size.

The yacht is characterized by simplicity and speed of control. It is fast, responsive and well balanced. Dufour 61 is one of the most comfortable yachts to manage.

Of course, such a large boat also offers luxurious living conditions. Even with a super handy dinghy compartment tucked under the cockpit, there's plenty of room inside for a large family and/or crew.

A stunning luxury gangway leads to the salon, which can be configured in three different ways. Two of them include a galley located forward of the saloon. The guest cabins are some of the best in this price segment. The cabins have spacious beds and good ventilation. The forward master stateroom features a unique Pullman offset bunk to improve comfort and space.

New yacht on deck Dufour 61 also distinguished by originality and attractiveness.

The sail controls, located in the stern of the yacht at two steering stations, easily fit under your hand. The bow deck is clean and immaculate. Generally, Dufour 61 is a very stylish "superyacht" of mass production.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380

Best Single Hull Cruiser Under 40 Feet

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380 replaced the 389 from Jeanneau and is located in the middle between the other four models in this line.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380 features a rigid chine from stem to transom, twin rudders, two helms and an optional lifting keel (8'10" in working position) The result is an outstanding combination of speed and comfort for those who like to get to their destination quickly.

On Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380 Selden mast installed. The grotto can be either classic or with a square top. In addition, the yacht carries a large genoa.

We can say that the yacht is focused on high performance and rigid, solid construction. According to the assurances of the owners, the yacht is perfectly managed by a team of two people!

The layout includes a choice of two or three cabins with one or two bathrooms. The master cabin is located forward with a corner bed and an additional bathroom. Aft there is a choice of two cabins or one cabin and a large pantry.

In the second option, you can also order a separate bathroom on the starboard side, which can be used as a storage locker. The interior is light and airy and combines traditional functionality with contemporary design. Who said you have to be over 40 feet to have a yacht that fits the bill?

J/9

Best Dayseller

There are many boats that can be used for day trips. However, it can be argued that a real "dayseller" is not just a boat that can be used for this type of sailing, but a boat that takes care of its crew.

With that in mind, it's hard to come up with a better dayseller than J/9. The latest development from Al Johnston of J/Boats, J/9 offers the same excellent performance that sailors have long come to expect from a renowned manufacturer. Plus, it turned out that the boat perfectly withstands strong gusts of wind.

Al specially designed J/9 so that she is equally well controlled both under the mainsail alone, and under the mainsail and staysail. And while this works in terms of convenience, it also provides a great way to reduce crew hassle.

When it becomes difficult for you to tack and change tacks, then simply turn the mainsail and continue on one staysail. J/9 she will take you where you need to - just keep an eye on what is happening periodically.

Spacious boat cockpit, comfortable open transom and comfortable cockpit benches with no less comfortable and practical cushions. Thanks to these pillows, you can take a good nap and relax.

An electrical auxiliary installation has made this small sport sloop even more enjoyable for those who want to enjoy a day on the water – whatever the weather.

Hylas 57

The best on-board systems

Systems on board Hylas 57 left an indelible impression on almost all reviewers. The complex plumbing and electrical systems are well thought out and well documented. Behind every cabinet door and under every trapdoor, you'll find plumbing, valves, or electrical components neatly laid out and labelled. The website of the creators offers worldwide technical support.

When developing electrical systems for Hylas 57 the goal was to make the yacht equally comfortable both at sea and in the dock. With this in mind, there is a 12-volt system for entertainment and communications equipment on board, as well as a 24-volt system for navigation and lighting.

The 6,000 W inverter easily powers the hydraulics as well as the cooking systems. Lithium batteries with a capacity of 900 amps and a voltage of 48 volts can provide operation of all heating, cooling, cooking, entertainment and operation systems (including hot water, which receives heat from the air conditioning system) for 12 hours without recharging.

From the top, there are a variety of auxiliary systems, from several video cameras to monitor the installation to a smart power retractable sunroof. All this is designed to make life afloat as pleasant as possible. There will be more of these technologies soon. Sailors-guards may grumble, but the ease with which Hylas can be managed by a small team worth every penny. This is an ideal solution for both experienced sailors and beginners.
