What to read for a yachtsman? Part 1
« : 01.01.2022, 19:27:53 »

So, the tree is already decorated, the yacht is moored and there is some free time. What should you do? We are sure that reading books (in any form) is a great pastime. Especially if these are books about yachting! We present you with a small overview of yachting books that are worthy of your time and attention.

Sailing without stress

The book's author, Duncan Wells, traveled extensively, often sailing alone. Over the decades at sea, he has accumulated a huge amount of practical advice and tricks.

Duncan was very eager to share his knowledge and became a sailing instructor. Over time, he came up with the idea to write a guide for yachtsmen. As a result, Sailing Without Stress has become one of the most popular books on Amazon.

Duncan touches on an extensive list of topics - from anchorage in the marina to anchoring the yacht. Wells' approach is based on safe navigation, logic and a practical understanding of the reality of sailing.

Classic: “Cruise Alerte”

In 1889, Edward Frederick Knight traveled to the island of Trinidad. There, the journalist intended to find the lost treasures. Trinidad has indeed been looking for mythical caches for centuries, and Knight decided to join the search.

So, he outfitted a 64-foot Alerte ketch, assembled a team and hit the road. Knight hardly found any treasures, but he described his adventures in great detail. And not just in detail, but also successfully! Dozens of writers after him were inspired by this work to write their works.

But not Alerte alone. Edward has traveled all his life and has seen a huge number of places. Regarding sailing, his knowledge was never limited to ketch. Dinghy, big and small boats, ships - this is just an incomplete list of those types of ships in which Knight understood.

Winter on Tierra del Fuego - sailing adventure in Patagonia

In this book, Nick Coglan talks about traveling on a Bosun Bird 30 yacht with his wife. The whole story revolves around the journey from Cape Town to Patagonia.

Through the prism of this trip, Nick talks about his life as a yachtsman and how he came to this path.

This book is at the same time a philosophical reflection with a small splash of practical advice, and just a story from life. In addition, a number of political and historical topics are touched upon.

Usually, from a person who has a lot of experience in something, you can expect to have some arrogance regarding amateurs or those who are not familiar with the topic. But not in this case. Nick managed to convey his thoughts in a simple and intelligible language. The very case when everything is “simple and tasteful”.

Curious creatures of the deep sea

Chris Thorogood armed himself with a camera, a light writing style, and created an amazingly beautiful reference book of sea creatures. The entire book consists of photographs and concise, but informative information about a particular animal, jellyfish or fish.

Let's face it, the wild nature is beautiful in its diversity. And Chris is not shy about showing it. This is the very case when the book really recommended to reading.
