Clothes for an offshore cruise

This time we will talk about the criteria for choosing clothes for yachting in the inhospitable conditions of northern latitudes and cold seasons. Yes, it’s already summer in two months, but the sleigh needs to be prepared in the summer…

Pay attention on the membrane

There are various options here. Musto, Henri-Lloyd and North Sails Performance use Gore-Tex (or Gore-Tex Pro), Zhik… However, they are all varieties of waterproof breathable fabrics (WBF). Since the introduction of the original Gore-Tex in the 1970s, new designs have been constantly emerging.

Membrane fabric must perform two functions: waterproof and breathable. Thus, it protects the sailor from wind, waves and rain. At the same time, such a fabric allows the natural moisture released by our body to pass through.

Jacket collar

A good, high collar is essential for protection from the wind and cold at sea. It must be quite complex in design, because, again, it must be large enough and warm enough to keep warm.

At the same time, it is extremely important that the collar does not restrict movement, especially during intensive work. Fleece lining is key. Take a break from this.

Jacket hood

A good hood will protect your head and keep you warm and dry. It should be large enough to comfortably cover your head. Don't forget that most likely you will be wearing a hat, so keep this in mind when choosing a jacket with a hood.

A useful addition would be a visor on the hood. It will prevent large amounts of water from getting on your face. Remember that in order for the hood to perform its functions properly, it must fit snugly on the head. That is why it will be logical to choose an adjustable hood.

Neck, wrist and ankle protection

Large amounts of water can enter under the jacket through openings at the neck, wrists and ankles. The presence of neoprene seals, internal gaiters and cuffs ensure that you stay dry.

Remember that these tools may be unusual and not very convenient for yachting enthusiasts in the warm regions of the planet. Think about what other means of protection against water are.

Pockets

Yachtsmen carry a variety of devices with them, from knives to flashlights and compasses. Pockets should be at an angle so that they can be easily reached, but at the same time so that the equipment does not fall out.

Pockets should be closed with a zipper or Velcro. Some models of jackets, in addition to zippers, also have a protective valve. In any case, in addition to functional pockets, there should be hand pockets. Preferably with a fleece lining - so your hands definitely won't get numb.

Additional elements:

What else to pay attention to? There are a couple of points:

- Reflective tape is an important element that will allow you to remain visible in the dark.
- The seams of the jacket must be secure. Preferably glued from the inside to prevent water ingress.
- Bend points - elbows, seat, shoulders - should be reinforced from wear and tear.
- Zippers must be strong and waterproof. Ideally, they should be equipped with safety valves.

Here are some tips we wanted to give you. There are many offers on the market and sometimes it seems that it is impossible to choose one thing. Well, we tried to make your choice easier.
